A 'no polish' event took place this week in the basement of La Pizzica in Fulham.

6 players, Old Subbuteo rules, Old figures and no polishing!

Great fun!

We were going to call it a 'no polish' event, but when reading it, it looked like we were banning the entire nation of Poland!
So, as Subbuteo polish was an Italian invention, we named the event the Non Lucido Championship. :B):

The next event is planned for April, and on baize pitches to reduce the slide further!

It turns out I will be defending the trophy
Grande Curlo!

Fantastic! And you are right, is better "no lucido" than "No Polish", only for the respect of people of Poland😆

In truth I am saddened that the English Subbuteo Association has seen fit to appoint an old Subbuteo director.

The beauty of the old Subbuteo movement for me was that is represented an independent collective of like-minded individuals who organised events free from the interference of national largely FISTF based organisations.

Each to their own but it’s not for us in the North.

Hi Ralphie,

I understand your point. And I would fully agree with you if all the UK Old Subbuteo events has to be organized by the ESA.
But nobody would forbid you to organize an “indipendent” Old Subbuteo event up there, as there is nothing as an Old Subbuteo trademark held by anyone.
Even if I do know nothing, nada, zero about ESA, I would rather hope for the opposite way, I mean that the Old Subbuteo spirit and values will find a way under the ESA skin. And I would not trust on nobody but Finger to succeed on it.

An interesting hypothesis...

"Organisation and central control is the death of Old Subbuteo".
Discuss (3000 words)

Over the last 15 years or so Old Subbuteo appears to have been:

- A community rather than a constituted organisation
- A journey rather than a destination

This has allowed the movement to respond to things as they arise, whilst keeping close to shared values. A sort of self-guided evolution of discovering new ways of doing things.

To achieve this with a degree of collective agreement has required some central control over the years.
For example: Decisions made over the years to remove rankings; removing the need for referees; Replacing trophies with local food produce (for example!)

There has also been some central decision-making on occasions (by the Old Subbuteo Council) to address unwanted behaviours from individual and clubs (in order to protect the core values of friendship and community).

In England, we are also on an Old Journey. But it feels different from the Italian journey. To date, we've had an informal approach, where like minded folks just do some Old Subbuteo, or retro Subbuteo, or anything that reminds them of playing like kids (currently 'Old School Subbuteo' is becoming a popular idiom, representing the feeling of the game desired by many here).
With the increased interest in Subbuteo that arose during lockdown, and with the added focus of a world cup event returning to the birthplace of Subbuteo in 2024, bit of coordination might help to increase interest and involvement...?

So, how to balance freedom and control...?
The age old question of how society develops healthily.

Let's see how we go... :D  ;) :P :o: :B):
